Set in the dirt paths of Afghanistan, The Kite Runner is an ode to friendship. It marvels the relations of Amir, a privileged young boy, and his servant friend Hassan. Both friends are close like brothers in spite of the employer-employee relationship between them.
To what lengths do friends have to go to prove their friendship? Is friendship worth braving tragedy? Hassan teaches us a lesson so beautifully and painstakingly that you cannot help but marvel in the awe of his loyalty.
The two friends take part in the Kite Festival and Amir is eager to please his never-proud father. His father was a great football player in his age and Amir's love for books and literature was looked upon as stupidity.
Amir loves writing short stories and sometimes reads them out to Hassan but never to Baba as he knows that he will never be appreciated. After his mother's death the distance between Amir and Hassan deepened for the worse.
Now the kite festival was approaching and Hassan being a kite-runner agrees to help his Amir Jan wholeheartedly. But something unspeakable happens to the boys on that day and Amir comes back home never to be the same again.
Soon war starts, and the Afghan they know becomes the Afghan they knew. Everything changes and the incident from that particular day is etched so deeply in each others' minds that they break apart.
Amir locks himself up in his room for fear of facing Hassan and the guilt bites at him from everywhere. Eventually Hassan begins to cope but they still don't talk. How can people who could have given each other their lives fall apart in a manner to never want to speak or see each other again?
War times are bad and they take their toll on everything from humans to dogs, from soldiers to beasts, from pedants to saboteurs. Such was the situation in Afghan too.

War times are bad and they take their toll on everything from humans to dogs, from soldiers to beasts, from pedants to saboteurs. Such was the situation in Afghan too.
Amidst this upheaval Amir is struggling with his newfound guilt and he takes to unholy and sickly means to send Hassan away. The day eventually comes when Hassan's father is fed up of all the lying and the torture and not being able to see his son in so much sorrow, he decides to move.
This breaks Baba's heart as he and Hassan's father were best friends but Amir is delighted that he has succeeded. Due to the war, Amir and Baba are forced to flee to the States. Baba seldom disagrees that if Hassan and his father were there then the move wouldn't be so painful and difficult.
Even in the States Amir finds himself asphyxiating each time Hassan's name came up. Eventually they both-Amir and Baba-begin to get with the American life.
Soon Amir marries the love of his life and they live as a happy family. Trouble starts when Baba's best friend calls Amir to come back to Afghan. "A chance to undo the sins" he calls it. Amir is but forced to go back to his native for he had never got what he sought for.
Something which neither the dirt paths of Afghan nor the wide roads of America gave him. Something for which he could sacrifice every single piece of his new life, except maybe his wife, for he was not living merely existing.
But what Amir does not know is something awaits him in Afghan. Something delightful yet horrible. A truth that shook his ancestral generations. A sacrifice that looked upon him and his long forgotten friend Hassan.
He is in for a series of scandals and secrets, some which hurt him, others which torture him and some which might give him solace. Amir goes on, not caring for anything or anyone, and finds an Afghan he never wanted to know.
And in that land awaited him his last chance to life- redemption. Written artistically and craftily, Khaled Hosseini has done a marvellous work on all the characters. The storyline and plot is breathtaking. The killing suspense and sad tragedies keep us hinged to the last of the pages. A must- read!
