Unique. An attribute that describes STARGIRL perfectly. In an age where conscious young minds clutch to their withering images in a plea to be understood only as sanity, Stargirl shows you what you've missed being.
She rocks your world when she's in it, that's what she does. Author Jerry Spinelli has showcased a character which has grown to seek our affection. A true classic in its form, it revolves around the love story of Leo and Susan a.k.a Stargirl.
The Prologue introduces Leo Barlock as a fourteen-year old who loves porcupine ties. Age and time fail to alter his love for the unusual and he is seen falling for the most unusual girl on the planet, Susan Caraway. At first, he considers her weird but eventually sparks start flying between them and go on to light a fire.
Susan is different. Don't take me wrong, folks! Different, because of a unique ability NOT due to a disability. She plays the ukulele and sings "Happy Birthday" to almost everyone on their birthdays. She does things which are mostly misjudged and misunderstood. Readers find themselves swept away by this non-conventional character who is rejected just about everywhere she goes.
Talks about Stargirl reach the school corridors but Leo finds that she herself is unaffected. Stargirl is a storm in her wake. She is forever happy and chooses to be friendly even though her feelings are not reciprocated by others. The cool girls dig and gossip about her and her image is proven to be insane.
But she is never sad! What adds to the mystery is that several turn of events find Stargirl captivating even the worst of her enemies. She has a strong hold on others' feelings and has an almost mystical-feel in her presence. Leo finds himself falling head-over-heels for her. But one thing that can destroy their love is if Leo wants Stargirl to be normal.
He has to choose- between Stargirl and all the others because alas, Leo finds himself a victim to Stargirl's shunning. Susan decides that her love matters more and opts to change herself. She dresses like the other girls but finds that she is still not accepted. Leo is elated and takes up the job of making her "normal". A big mistake.
Acceptance- do we really have to go to any lengths for this one human satisfaction? Or rather indulge in the merits of isolation and disregard? Stargirl answers this young dilemma of identity with precision. She picks you up from the trauma of selection and segregation and puts you on the boardwalk for dreams.
Leo and Susan's relationship has a lot going on. The ball is coming and when Susan fails to keep up her new found conformity and ditches the whole idea to change into Stargirl again, Leo finds it hard to accept her. The question we need to ask ourselves now : Is love enough?
A must-read for people with hearts and souls on a tug, I say. A fiction that is philosophy in its heart, poetry in its words and drama in its plot, the book is truly reminiscing of the renowned author of "Number the Stars" Lois Lowry. At the end of the day, when we are faced with such beliefs many of us might choose the easier way out. But not everyone.
Go ahead and capture the drama unfold as Susan faces the shittiest problem in life called ACCEPTANCE. As Katy Perry sang in her song Unconditionally from the album Prism "Acceptance is the key, to be truly free". Will she break her bonds with her true self just to be seen by others as a leader, or will she be the victim of cynicism and forget to lead the path of freedom? For what it's worth Stargirl knows just what to do. But that's not going to help her any better.
The jocks and the geeks at Mica Area High School, Arizona are in for a lesson on non-conformity. A book that will change your attitude about life, change and acceptance. Read the book NOW for all the action and suspense.
