One of the most popular and Legend...wait for it… dary sitcoms has come to its end, when finally the suspense of the mother is broken. For those of you who aren’t familiar, How I Met Your Mother is a sitcom which portrays the protagonist Ted Mosby, telling his children in 2030 about all the events that led to his meeting their mother.
Contrary to its name, the show is mostly not about how Ted met his future wife. It is rather about the escapades of Ted and his gang, including Marshall and his long time girlfriend, Lily who eventually becomes his wife, Barney who is an incorrigible womanizer and Robin, an attractive Canadian news reporter whom Ted is smitten by at first sight and is convinced that she would be his soul mate. The series continues for 9 seasons narrating the various escapades of the five friends together and Ted’s various failed relationships.
The show also intersperses a few events and details about the mother during various episodes in the show. In the first episode, Ted tells his kids about how he met Robin. All the viewers assumed Robin to be the mother but in the end, he refers to her as Aunt Robin. After that, he has relationships with various other women who were speculated to be the mother, but Robin has been his most persistent chase, whom he could just not let go of for a very long time. Ted was always a person who believed in true love and destiny, and wanted to marry “the one, settle down with her and have children. He assumed Robin to be the “The One”, his true soul mate before he realized that Robin had other plans, was commitment phobic and career- focused.
In the first episode, he falls in love with her at first sight and steals a blue horn for in the end, which is symbolic throughout their relationship. He also says “I love you” to her on the first date itself which scares her off. They start a brief relationship but break up soon after they realize that they want different things from life. Despite of their differences, Ted never stopped loving Robin for a very long time. Robin also developed a close friendship with Ted and the rest of the gang.
The show is funny and entertaining, and includes many sexual innuendos. Though extremely irrelevant of the topic, it provides a few good laughs and works as a good stress buster. The Mother was shown in different ways through various episodes, but her face is actually shown only in the 8th season. Meanwhile, all the HIMYM fans were busy making various speculations as to all the possibilities of who could be the mother. It has been a long awaited suspense, which was revealed over the 9th and final season of the show which portrays several snippets from the future between Ted and The Mother, the finale, portraying how he finally met the mother. Even the mother’s name is only revealed in the finale episode.
How I Met Your Mother is coming of age sitcom which showcases the transformation and deep friendship of five different individuals rather than the story of how Ted met his wife. The title is very misleading and the story has been dragging along for nine whole seasons which does get monotonous in between and builds up frustration as it has diverted so vastly from the main topic.
Nevertheless, it is a good entertainer and worthwhile to watch if you’re bored and have nothing else to do to spend your time. The finale episode for which all these nine seasons have been building up is definitely an unexpected surprise as well as a connection of all the dots throughout the show which makes it worth the wait.
Advice: Don’t watch it for the story but for the many legend...wait for it.. dary moments on the show.
