A Tournament that has been held since 1877 and is one of the Four major Grand-Slams ended on Sunday. With a new winner emerging this year tradition continued as Novak Djokovic’s name was inscribed on the Gentlemans Singles Trophy for the second time in his career.
Wimbledon which is undoubtedly the most famous of the Four Grand-Slams is held for nearly about two weeks (13 Days to be precise). This year the tournament had seen quite a lot of new faces but the old ones were there undoubtedly both on the courts and in the stands. The finalists of the Wimbledon 2014 were the Serbian Champ Novak Djokovic and the Swiss Maestro Roger Federer both of them who had an extremely good tournament in the past two weeks. Wimbledon was the comeback tournament for Federer and also the tournament Djokovic cherished to win.
Their final lasted for more than four hours with both players vying for the title anfd fighting for each and every point.
The First Set was quite the Warm-Up Set (which has been the case for several of Federer’s Finals) and went into the Tie-Breaker with Federer winning 9-7 credits to his awesome serve but which was not working to his advantage during the set. Though both players were getting used to each others playing style and game tactics in this set neither of them left an opportunity to take the upper hand in the set but, Federer’s serve managed to push him through to the Second Set.
In the Second Set with both players thoroughly clear about each other’s game Federer seemed to stumble till a certain extent as he double faulted at a crucial break point and his shot execution was not thorough enough to keep the ball in the bounds of the court. With Federer’s unforced errors stacking up Novak’s serve increased Federer’s discomfort and managed to execute his shots perfectly.
This set had quite a lot of rallying and back court tennis, both the players were not hurrying to finish the point but as the opportunity presented itself you could see a smooth back-hand short cross court placement by Djokovic (he did that most of the time Federer came up to the net and surprisingly succeeded as Serve and Volley is a traditional Federer game tactic) or a unreachable forehand finish by Federer. The Second Set ended in Djoko’s favour; 6-4.
The Third Set surprisingly went to a tie breaker with Djokovic winning 7-4 in the tie break. Extremely fast foot-work, quick court coverage, superb shot selection, precise execution and serve which was nearly impossible to get back into the court put Djokovic above Federer. Roger seemed to be getting tired in the third set as he was not able to hold a majority of his service games which was his major strength. Unforced error at crucial points and poor shot execution cost Federer the set and let Djokovic get one step closer to his dream of winning.
The Fourth Set saw Federer rise from the dead saving a Championship Point and winning three games in a row to pocket the set. This set was a pure display of excellence at another level. This set saw the best form of the man who had won this tournament a record Seven times equaling Pete Sampras’s record. Perfect ground strokes execution, signature backhand finishes, remarkable court coverage and those mind blowing untouchable services which wizzed by Novak even before he could react got Roger this set.
I would not like to say much about the fifth set as it was a nerve-wracking, nail biting (or any other phrase you could think of which means nervous) set for all RF fans. Djokovic’s consistency, fast returns and execution got him through the Final. Beside the fact that he had slipped twice during the match both times near the same place and a physiotherapist stretching his leg muscles he managed to win.
It was a night of display of tennis beyond the level of excellence and perfection. No doubt that Federer didn’t leave any stone unturned in his pursuit for his 8th Wimbledon Title Novak seemed more eager. Thus Novak Djokovic completed his dream of winning Wimbledon on 6th July 2014 by beating the Swiss maestro:
It is some of the best tennis I have ever seen in my life and the tradition and prestige of the venue are just the icing on the cake. We witnessed two players who will surely go down in the History Books of this Sport.
Till Next Time, Game Set and Match!
