Superstitions

Superstitions exist in every part of the world. I, living in India, have witnessed these superstitions myself, sometimes even in the sanctity of my own home.

Superstitions play numerous tricks with our minds and create a belief that is absolutely false. And this belief becomes such a big deal that if someone tries to go against it, that person is 'DISOBEYING OR DISRESPECTING HIS CULTURE'.

Superstitions like, if a black cat crosses your road, you will have to face a bad day or cutting your nails in the night invites thieves, are completely illogical. Let's take a closer look at these examples. A cat is crossing the road because it wants to find some food, and you witnessing that makes your day bad. WHERE IS THE LOGIC OR THE CONNECTION? That cat does not even bother to look at you; it just needs some tuna, for Pete’s sake! Many people cannot accept the fact that their day was bound to go bad and the cat's presence is just a matter of co-incidence.

The next example is even more ridiculous; are thieves just waiting outside your house for you to cut your nails and then be like, "Oh look he/she is cutting nails, that’s our cue!" That is so stupid, it’s almost laughable.

Half of the superstitions in the world do not even make sense. 'Don't play with scissors - bad luck. Don’t play with your keys - bad luck. Don’t wash your hair on the 84th Sunday - bad luck. HOW DO THEY EVEN CONNECT?

Some cultures in India have some very pathetic superstitions that aren't funny at all but are actually harmful. Some even lead to black magic which is just harming and is a dishonor to the society of India. This problem is widespread in our country and contrary to popular perception, superstitions and black magic are practiced not just among the uneducated or illiterate or those living in rural areas. Sadly, such irrational practices are common among educated urban folks too.

Here are some silly examples that I found out on the internet:

•While leaving home, sighting a widow or a barren woman is not lucky.

•The sitting of an owl over the house-top is a sure sign of approaching ruin and destruction.

•If a discussion is going on and you hear a lizard making a noise on the ceiling or on the wall, it is a good omen to let you know that it is true.

Even the educated of masses in India fail to completely eradicate following them, and this is actually causing hindrances on the path of development for India. I feel rather than believing in this foolishness, one should actually believe in common sense (ever heard of it?) and think about happenings rationally. One should see how superstitions cause difficulty in daily life. One must spread awareness and take measures into action now, because as I say it is either now or never!

Be happy, Be positive, Laugh, love, live your life!

Peace

Superb! You excellently showed the bitter fact which still exists in society. It is curse to all human being to create this kind of principles in society. Now even in 21st century we're facing this kind of silly things. Only the education is weapon to eradicate and spread awareness among masses to escape from superstitions. But it needs to be promoted. Though you find it almost in every sector of the world. But still its disapproved in some extremely backward societies. Superstitious nature or mindset among some people is causing for block in the way of spread of education. Recently we heard that in Pune Dr. Dabolkar who was fighting against these superstitions and who was anxiously striving to take out the society from backwardness was been killed by some evil superstitious people.
So this is the bitter fact of society that we're refraining to wipe out superstitions and whoever attempts to do that so he/she gets eliminated or killed.
At last I would say, you all are working hard to develop and to share some thoughts in front of all. This can be seemed as great step towards the development or change in society among the mindset of the masses
