This team, on paper, has the potential to compete with Bayern Munich and has in the past four seasons won two consecutive Bundesliga titles and finished runner-up on the other two occasions. In this same period they were the runners-up in the UEFA Champions League 2012/13 season and have won DFB-POKAL in 2012 DFB Supercup in 2013 and 2014.
In the past three seasons we have seen the league-collapses of Manchester United, AC Milan and Inter Milan but even these 3 teams have never seen themselves languishing right at the bottom of the league table on any occasion. Currently, after 10 games, Dortmund is rock bottom in this season’s Bundesliga with P10 W2 D1 L7 PTS 7. But in the Champions League they have won all the four games they have played. They are also unbeaten in the DFB-Pokal and kicked of their season with a win over Bayern Munich in the DFL-Supercup .That’s quite a contrast in results, right? With United and both Milans, their Champions League and domestic league cups form too was acceptable and not outstanding, just the same as their league form. There wasn’t such a contrast in their performances in different leagues.
People say the main cause of this problem is the loss of Robert Lewandowski .I agree that this is the main problem as goals win matches. Dortmund has gotten Adrian Ramos and Ciro Immobile as replacements but they aren’t anywhere near Lewandowski in class. The team has only found the back of the net on 11 occasions in the league.
PROBLEMS UP FRONT
Their midfield: Hard to see anyone finding problems with this section as they have been bolstered by the return of Marco Reus and Ilkay Gundogan from injury and have resigned Shinji Kagawa from Manchester United. Also, they have already proven first team players like Jakub Blaszczykowski and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
The core of their defence remains untouched with Mnauel Friedrich being the only player who isn’t on the roster this season. Mathias Ginter has been purchased as a replacement. One of the world’s best defenders, Mata Hummels, is a part of this defence.
The team’s goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller based on current form the fourth choice for Germany. His reflexes and movements have declined and he has even been stripped of the teams vice captaincy (a sign that he is low on confidence).
A possible reason for this is that they play well only when there is a fear of elimination (they will be eliminated from the Bundesliga if their form remains the same)
Yes a few key players have been injured during the month of September but that really doesn’t justify a team of this class to be last in a league.
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF THIS BIZZARE FORM?
1. Most of the players, Mats Hummels and Marco Reus being the most prominent are rumoured to be wanting away from the team and believe that impressive performances in Europe will enable them to get lucrative offers.
2. Their style of play is familiar to the teams in the Bundesliga who have come up wuth the adept strategies to counter. (Note: none of the teams in Dortmund’s group or their opponents in this seasons DFB-Pokal are from the German first tier.)
3. Lack of a finisher: The fans of this team (considered by many to be the most passionate fans in the world) surely deserve better. Will Dortmund rise in the league? Let’s hope for the sake of German football that they do rise otherwise it will be an unchallenged domination by Bayern Munich.
They may be attempting to do a Liverpool 2005 or Chelsea 2012 (both these teams finished the league outside the UCL places but won the UCL thereby securing qualification as defending champions) but come the knockouts and one bad night (they experienced one bad night in the 2013 Final and the 2014 quarter final 1st leg) coupled with a bad season will lead to no European football and a mass exodus of top class talent.
Next fixture: vs. Borussia Monchengladbach
